UNR receives $1 million in funding for lithium battery research

The University of Nevada, Reno will receive $1 million for lithium battery research as it joins the renewable energy push.

The National Science Foundation's Regional Innovations Program is issuing the funds. It granted 44 awards throughout the country as part of its first-ever Engines Development Awards.

The awards are designed to "advance key technologies, address societal challenges and create economic opportunities." Seven of the awards focused on sustainable energy.

The funding will be used to research lithium extraction and the development and recycling of lithium batteries.

The university is also introducing a certificate program for lithium battery production and recycling and a batteries technology minor.

The two years of funding are designed to grow regional innovation while training and developing the local workforce. After the two years, if selected by the NSF, UNR can compete for up to $160 million in additional funding over a 10-year period.

"This award signifies the University of Nevada, Reno's expertise and leadership in a critical time for renewable energy," University President Brian Sandoval said in a press release. "We are proud that our university – among many core partners – is contributing to northern Nevada's essential role in the global lithium supply chain."

UNR's research will help strengthen the domestic battery supply chain and fuel development of product components used in devices including electric vehicles and laptops, according to press releases sent out by senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto.

Nevada is home to the only operating lithium mine in the country and one of its largest lithium deposits.
