Chinese companies to provide solar panels to 200MW Egypt plant

Two Chinese companies have signed a contract to supply solar panels to and do the EPC work on the 200MW Kom Ombo project in Egypt.

The 200MW utility-scale solar plant is expected to be operational by early next year.

The plant will contribute to the Egyptian government's target to generate 42% of the country's electricity from renewable energy sources by 2035.

It is also expected to deliver "one of the lowest generation tariffs in Africa."

The Kom Ombo plant will be located less than 20km from Africa's biggest solar park, the 1,465MW Benban complex.

It is 805km south of Cairo and 78km northwest of Aswan and "will have an installed capacity of 200MWac and a DC capacity of 230MW, as well as a 220kV booster station."

It is expected to be commercially operational in January 2024.

Once fully functional, the new utility-scale plant will serve more than 100,000 households.

Recently, LONGi announced the signing of a contract with Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction for the supply of high-efficiency mono PERC bifacial modules to the Kom Ombo project.

A monofacial solar panel only absorbs sunlight from the front surface of the solar panel while the bifacial solar panel features solar cells on both sides.

The developer is ACWA Power and the EPC contract will be fulfilled by a consortium of China Power Engineering Consult and Zhejiang Thermal Power, from the China Energy Engineering Company (CEEC) group.

"The project will provide power for 130,000 households and eliminate an annual 336,000 tons of carbon emissions. "This would contribute to Egypt's energy transition and providing additional impetus to the country's economic and social growth," said LONGi.

Egypt's 2035 Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy, which builds on previous strategies, emphasises the importance of renewable energy.

Egypt is working on increasing the supply of electricity generated from renewable sources to 42% by 2035.
